How to Control Your Ball Flight in the Wind

COACH’S CORNER
by Crown Golf Performance

If you’re heading overseas for a golf trip, chances are the wind will become part of the round, especially on links-style courses across the UK and Ireland. The key isn’t to fight it. It’s to control your launch, spin and speed so the ball has less opportunity to get knocked around.

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE: SWINGING HARDER

When golfers see a strong headwind, the instinct is often to hit the shot harder. But extra speed can add spin and launch, which gives the wind even more influence over the golf ball. Instead, your goal should be a calmer, more controlled strike.

ON-COURSE THOUGHT

MORE CLUB. LESS SWING. LOWER FLIGHT.

You don’t need to manufacture a dramatic punch shot every time the wind picks up. For most golfers, simply taking more club and reducing effort is enough to bring the flight down and make distance more predictable. Let the club do the work and prioritize center contact.

COACH MARCUS’ TAKEAWAY

On your next golf trip, don’t try to beat the wind with speed. Make a balanced swing and control the ball instead of fighting the conditions.

Additionally: keep the ball position in the
middle/back of your stance.
