Messinian Authenticity: Experiencing Traditions Firsthand in Costa Navarino
Edited by Paulina Björk Kapsalis
Stepping through the door at a traditional house near Pylos you’re greeted with treats: a plate of lallagia (dough fritters) soaked in petimezi (grape must), and fruit preserves. This is your first taste of Messinian hospitality (philoxenia) and of the local cuisine, as you join a different kind of cooking class organized by Costa Navarino.
Enjoy a different kind of cooking class
An invitation to lunch from local women comes with a footnote: leave formalities at the door and, of course, bring the children along. In this country kitchen, you’ll pick up authentic recipes and learn the secrets of the region’s culinary tradition; you’ll try your hand at rolling traditional fillo pastry, cook kokkoras krasatos (the local version of coq au vin), and prepare a galopita (milk pie), and other local dishes. But that’s not all. You’ll also get a taste of how the people here celebrate important occasions, as the women sing and dance. You can join in, too – they’re happy to teach you the steps of the classic Syrtaki or the Kalamatiano. The evening comes to a close in the courtyard under the stars with a glass of homemade liqueur and dessert.

From our Ambassador Director, John Brown ” The cooking class was a remarkable experience that combines participating in the making of a traditional Greek feast, enjoying local Greek wines and participating in some traditional Greek music and dance. All while overlooking the beauty of Navarino Bay. An evening you will never forget.“

Learn the art of cheesemaking
Every part of a traditional Messinian meal is made locally – including the cheese. During a special cheesemaking class organized for large groups exclusively at Kafenio (traditional Greek café), local women will show you how they make tyromyzithra, a soft white cheese, from fresh goat’s milk. The cheese will then be served with honey and cinnamon. You’ll also sample other local cheeses, accompanied by delicious regional wines and seasonal fruits, and learn all the secrets of Messinia’s time-honored production methods, passed down from older generations.

Observe a local tradition for all the senses
On summer afternoons, the ladies of the Glyfada Cultural Association don traditional costumes, gather around a large wooden table and unite their voices in songs known as tragoudia tis tavlas (“songs of the table”). While they sing a capella, they prepare boukies (literally “small bites”), a type of homemade pasta that is offered to the guests at the end of the songfest.

Haotong Li Scores Emotional Win at Qatar Masters
On a thrilling Sunday in February, golfer Haotong Li celebrated a stunning victory at the Qatar Masters, which took place at the Doha Golf Club. With a captivating finish, Li clinched the title by sinking a 15-foot birdie putt on the last hole, sealing his win with a score of 16-under par. This victory marks Li’s fourth title on the prestigious European Tour, and it couldn’t have come at a better time!
From Leader to Champion
Entering the final round as the overnight leader, Li had a comfortable two-shot cushion. It wasn’t long before he extended that lead to an impressive four shots early in the day. However, the back nine proved to be tougher than anticipated. After facing a setback with a bogey on the 15th hole, Li found himself tied with Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen at 15-under par.
A Clutch Finish
While pressure was certainly mounting, Li kept his composure during the final moments of the tournament. Demonstrating his skill and focus, he delivered an incredible birdie putt on the 18th hole, edging out Neergaard-Petersen, who finished in second place at 15-under par after an impressive final-round score of 65. Meanwhile, Brandon Robinson Thompson took home third place, finishing at 13-under par with a final round of 70.
Emotional Moments and Reflection
After securing the win, Li couldn’t hold back his emotions. When the moment of victory arrived, it was a whirlwind of joyous roars, ecstatic fist pumps, and even tears as he shared an emotional embrace with his caddie. This win is particularly special for Li as it marks his first victory since the 2022 BMW International Open, and those long days of hard work and determination paid off in a big way.
Looking Forward
Li has had his fair share of ups and downs throughout his career, including making the 2019 Presidents Cup team but struggling in subsequent seasons. At one point, he even considered stepping away from golf altogether! But through it all, Li maintained a strong belief that if he just kept working hard, his game would eventually reward him. And here we are—his victory at the Qatar Masters is more than just a win; it’s proof that hard work does pay off!
The excitement doesn’t stop here. The Qatar Masters is just one of a series of four Middle Eastern events on the tour. Golf fans can look forward to the DP World Tour heading to Kenya from February 20-23, 2025, which will surely spark more thrilling moments in golf!
