Audit Findings Raise Red Flags
The 83-page audit report outlines a staggering 221 purchases that totaled around 265,000 dollars from the jail’s commissary fund between January 2022 and December 2024. Auditors noted that these purchases blatantly violated state law as they were mischaracterized under misleading headings like “Prevent Juvenile Delinquency” and “Community Relations”.
One particularly eyebrow-raising purchase included a five thousand dollar payment to a local cigar bar labeled as “family violence prevention”. This was just a drop in the bucket, as similar questionable claims added up to about 17,500 dollars total. On top of that, there were almost 25,000 dollars flagged for other suspicious uses of commissary money, including almost 3,500 dollars spent on non-employees’ travel expenses, some of which were for the sheriff’s wife.

Also uncovered were more eyebrow-raising expenditures, such as 605 dollars for iCloud and Apple Music subscriptions registered under his wife’s name, which he falsely claimed were necessary for official business during parades. On top of that, funds were misused to cover conference registration costs for his wife and nine others in 2022 and 2023.
The report even highlighted that around 5,700 dollars in restaurant bills associated with conference expenses were submitted for reimbursement, and an astonishing 46% of those costs were for alcohol.
