Crystal Cave and Falls Adventure Mini Golf Marks 34 Years of Botanical Wonders
If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure in North Platte, look no further than Crystal Cave and Falls Adventure Mini Golf. Nestled behind the Cody Go-Karts Family Fun Park, this enchanting mini golf course has been delighting visitors for an incredible 34 years! But this isn’t your typical mini-golf experience—it’s a unique blend of nature and fun that offers a delightful escape for the whole family.
A Botanical Marvel
When you step onto the course, you’re not just greeted by fun obstacles and holes. You enter a botanical wonderland! Co-owner Duanne Gaedke, along with his wife Dixie, nurtured all the plants on the property from seeds. In the early days, they watered them all by hand until they finally got smart and installed driplines to streamline the process. The course boasts a staggering 20 holes, each ingeniously embedded within lush greenery and colorful blooms. Best of all, this mini golf course is the only classified nature trail mini golf course in the entire United States! Talk about a title to be proud of!
Accessibility and Family-Friendly Fun
Everyone can enjoy a round of golf here, as Duanne and Dixie have designed the course with accessibility in mind. While some holes are raised on platforms, they also made sure to include extra accessible holes for wheelchair users. Families will also find child-friendly features scattered throughout, including hidden dinosaur footprints in the waterbeds for kids to stumble upon. How cool is that?
Waterfalls and Historical Touches
As you make your way through the course, you’ll encounter 17 stunning waterfalls and pools, each lovingly named after friends and family members of the Gaedkes. This personal touch not only adds to the charm but also creates a wonderful storytelling element that enhances the experience.
Duanne was inspired to create this whimsical course back in 1991 while spending time at his father’s hospital bedside. Fast forward to the present, and at the age of 78, Duanne remains actively involved in managing the course, including maintaining unique features named after historical figures. One highlight is a remarkable 22-feet deep well that was dug by hand and a log cabin dedicated to the famous frontiersman Jim Bridger.
Building Dreams
Duanne and Dixie are not only passionate about mini golf; they have a long history of entrepreneurship, having operated several businesses including B & D Office Supply and Cody Go-Karts. Their strong connection to the local area runs deep, tied to the legacy of Buffalo Bill’s ranch. In fact, the buildings scattered around the golf course are made from old lumber belonging to a milk barn where Duanne used to milk cows.
But that’s not all! The stunning rocky embellishments and whimsical caves you see were crafted using molds cast from materials that were part of the Kingsley Dam at Lake McConaughy back in 1972. Duanne camped out for 40 days to get the necessary permissions and create those detailed molds!
An Ongoing Journey
Even after all these years, the Gaedkes show no signs of slowing down. They’re always brainstorming new ideas to enhance the course. Duanne often finds himself awakening in the middle of the night with fresh inspiration on how to improve the experience for visitors. Meanwhile, Dixie loves chatting with guests in their gift shop, where she enjoys learning where people are traveling from.
The combination of nature, fun, and personal history really sets Crystal Cave and Falls Adventure Mini Golf apart. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, make sure you check it out! You won’t just play a game of mini golf—you’ll embark on a colorful journey that is rich in botanical beauty and heartfelt stories.
