News Summary
The 2026 Genesis Invitational faced major setbacks due to heavy rain, causing a three-hour delay on the PGA Tour. After resuming play, darkness halted proceedings again, leaving several players to finish their first rounds the following morning. Aaron Rai is leading at 6 under, while Rory McIlroy and Jacob Bridgeman are tied at 5 under. Heavy Rain Causes Delays at the 2026 Genesis Invitational
Golf fans might want to hold onto their umbrellas as the 2026 Genesis Invitational faced unexpected challenges right from the start! The event, the sixth tournament on the prestigious PGA Tour calendar, kicked off but was quickly interrupted by a significant downpour. The heavy rain created puddles on the greens, leading to a three-hour weather delay on Thursday morning.
When Will They Play Again?
After the rain subsided, play finally resumed around 4 p.m. ET. However, it was short-lived as darkness fell, halting play again at 8:41 p.m. ET. It seems like Mother Nature had different plans for the tournament. Now, a total of thirty players will have to complete their first round Friday morning. Talk about a wild start!
Leading the Pack
As of the last update before the suspension, Aaron Rai had stolen the spotlight and was leading at an impressive 6 under with just two holes left to play. Rai, a 30-year-old from England, is on the hunt for his second career victory on the PGA Tour. Could this be his moment?
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy and Jacob Bridgeman both finished their first rounds with a solid 5-under 66, sharing the lead. McIlroy wrapped up his round just after the evening suspension, while Bridgeman experienced a rollercoaster of a round, starting with an eagle on his very first hole but stumbling with a double bogey on number four. Thankfully, he bounced back nicely with birdies on the back nine.
Other Notable Players
As for the world’s top player, Scottie Scheffler, fans were likely surprised to see him struggle with a 4-over 39 on his front nine, leaving him tied for 69th place. Even the best can have an off day! The tournament has gathered all top 10 players from the Official World Golf Ranking, excluding Justin Thomas, who is still in recovery from surgery.
Historical Significance
The Genesis Invitational has a rich history, having been played since 1926 and has seen various venue changes along the way. This year marks the 60th time the Riviera course has hosted this distinguished event. The course itself is challenging, measuring 7,383 yards and playing as a par 71, testing even the most seasoned golfers.
Prize Money and Tournament Structure
Let’s not forget the stakes! The total purse for the Genesis is a whopping $20 million, with the winner walking away with a jaw-dropping $4 million. Golf enthusiasts are also keeping an eye on the PGA Tour’s cut rule, which allows the top 50 players and ties, plus anyone within 10 shots of the lead, to qualify for the next round.
Final Thoughts
With play expected to resume Friday morning, fans will be eagerly watching to see whether McIlroy can tie Horton Smith for 16th place on the all-time win list, potentially reaching 30 Tour victories if he claims victory.
