Bruce has been the go-to guy for maintaining the stunning golf course since 1987, and as he approaches his retirement in May 2025, he’s ready for a new chapter in life.
A Legacy of Excellence
At 62 years old, Bruce has certainly left his mark on the club, taking over the reins from Dick Bowey. Under his watchful eye, Berkhamsted Golf Club has gained fame for its gorgeous course, which is laid out on common land featuring beautiful, natural gorse and heather. With a motto like ‘golf as nature intended,’ it’s no wonder players from near and far seek the challenge of this remarkable course.

Course Challenges and Notable Designs
Bruce knows better than anyone that every hole on Berkhamsted’s course packs a challenge, even without a single bunker in sight. This is largely thanks to the visionary course designs by golfing greats like Willie Park and Harry Colt, whose legacies Bruce has carefully preserved over the years.
Dan Blesovsky, the General Manager of the club, has been quick to acknowledge Bruce’s incredible leadership, navigating the ups and downs of golf course management with poise and passion. Since 2007, Bruce also established the transformative Blue Course, tailored specifically to offer a true challenge for members who may not send the ball flying as far.

Golfing Culture, Elevated
As the popularity of golf continues to grow, it’s fascinating to see how the culture has evolved in this region. Recent surveys reveal that one in ten people in the region play golf, which is quite the contrast to the U.S. where it’s one in fourteen. The boom in interest has surged, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting many former driving range visitors to hit the lush greens of actual courses.
The Essential Role of Caddies
A unique aspect of golf in this part of the world is the presence of caddies. However, they’re not just there to lug your clubs around; they wear multiple hats as bartenders, cheerleaders, and scorekeepers. The professionalization of caddie services dates back to a boom in the 1990s, which saw a sharp increase in the number of golf courses.
At Haesley Nine Bridges, caddy service goes the extra mile with innovative “limousine” carts specifically designed for comfort. Desert Dunes Golf Course Closes: A Bittersweet Goodbye
News Summary
Desert Dunes Golf Course, a cherished local golfing venue since 1989, has announced its permanent closure due to financial challenges and maintenance issues. The course, known for its stunning landscapes and unique design by Robert Trent Jones Jr., leaves a void in the golfing community of Desert Hot Springs. As efforts transition the area into a nature preserve, locals reflect on the memories and events that made Desert Dunes a significant gathering place over the years.
Desert Dunes Golf Course Bows Out: A Sad Farewell
Golf enthusiasts are in shock as Desert Dunes Golf Course, a beloved local golfing destination, has announced its permanent closure. This news was posted on the course’s website, marking the end of an era for both the course and the many players who enjoyed its unique design and stunning views.
From a Dream to a Dilemma
Open since 1989, Desert Dunes was the first golf course designed by renowned course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. in the Coachella Valley. Tucked away off Palm Drive, just north of Interstate 10, it boasted sweeping landscapes and challenging fairways. However, it wasn’t without its difficulties. Players often struggled with the intense winds that swept across the course, creating unplayable conditions that frustrated both seasoned golfers and beginners alike.
The decision to close down, as it turns out, stemmed from multiple challenges. Unfortunately, a collapsing well and a failing watering system added to the woes of this once-thriving course. Financial losses only compounded these issues, leading to the final announcement that struck a chord with many. The reality is that maintaining a golf course comes with hefty costs, and without adequate funding for upkeep, the future looked grim.
A Loss for Desert Hot Springs
Desert Dunes was more than just a golf course—it was the only 18-hole regulation golf course in its community. With the doors now closed, the area is left with just one golf spot: Mission Lakes Country Club. The loss has left many locals wondering where they will get their next big game or relaxing round of golf. The course had its supporters and fans who appreciated its challenging layout, which many considered to be one of the better designs in the region.
Golf Course with an Eventful History
Over the years, Desert Dunes hosted a variety of events, including local U.S. Open qualifiers and several tournaments on the Canadian Tour, showcasing talent and bringing golfers together. Despite fluctuations in ownership—at one point even being briefly renamed to The Fields by a Japanese company—Desert Dunes maintained a unique character that players loved. However, the struggles with upkeep meant that it often lagged behind competitors in terms of course quality.
Turning a Page for the Land
While the golf course may be closing, the land itself is not going to waste. The wildlife and landscapes that made Desert Dunes so special are now being taken care of by the Oswit Land Trust. This group aims to transform the area into a nature preserve, hoping to create a space where local flora and fauna can thrive. Though they now oversee the land, they do not own the golf course and choose to keep land negotiations private until they are securely protected from potential threats.
What Lies Ahead?
Although plans for residential development have hovered around the course, concerns about the quality of golf facilities held back progress. Amid discussions surrounding the site, the awareness of Desert Dunes’ struggles also brought attention to broader issues of maintaining recreational spaces in our communities. The future remains uncertain, but the transformation into a nature preserve presents a new chapter for this storied land. With Oswit Land Trust’s recent acquisition of another course aimed for conversion into a nature preserve, it seems there’s hope for preserving these beautiful outdoor spaces for generations to come.
